The Chop Top Challenge is a road rally where teams compete to get the most points while traveling across the country in a car that they cut the top and windshield off of. It's a public art, car culture, and social network mash-up project, emphasizing the concept of spectacle in hopes of garnering an audience of art lovers and car enthusiasts alike. The first annual rally ran was April 1-4, 2016 from Chicago to Miami.

The 2016 Challenge kickoff party was held at the Silent Funny arts space in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago. Local bands played and three cars had the tops cut off live including the official referee vehicle. A parade was held on the morning of April 1st. Teams drove down Milwaukee Avenue, through downtown, and to the 18th Street Bridge.

Teams strategized on the fly for points en route to Miami based on the challenge list in order to maximize points. All challenges were posted on Instagram using the #choptopchallenge hashtag so spectators could watch the rally live using the map on our website.

Ten teams completed over 350 challenges during the course of the rally. The awards ceremony was held at Wynwood Brewery in Miami where TwerkTeam Racing was announced the overall winner with 8400 points. They took home the grand prize of 5000 pesos. Special awards were also awarded to three teams:

Punkest Team: Sawzallholics Anonymous
Commonwealth Award:
Barfing Duck Racing
Most Beautiful Piece of Shit:
Gran Turismo Racing

All marketing and promotional materials were created DIY including mixtapes, stickers, posters, t-shirts, and web development.

The destination for the 2017 Chop Top Challenge was Las Vegas (documentation forthcoming). For the 2018 series of the event, we will be headed to New Orleans.
